Les Maisons du Clair de la Plume is located in the heart of Grignan, a village steeped in history and mystery. Although the precise origins of Grignan remain unclear, its rich history is fascinating and well worth discovering.
The first steps of Grignan
The Roman presence in Grignan is attested by the discovery of tombs, coins and a granite milestone. However, it’s difficult to know whether the village already existed before the Romans arrived. What is certain is that the Moors played a crucial role in its initial development, building the first castle and ramparts in the 9th century.
Early writings and the rise of the seigneury
The first written mention of Grignan appears in the 12th century in the form of “Graignan” in Latin charters. The seigneury of Grignan, created in 1032 after the death of the King of Arles, was entrusted to the Adhemar de Monteil family in 1239. This seigneury evolved into a barony in the 14th century, before receiving the title of county in the 17th century.
A central role in Provencal history
In the 16th century, Louis Adhémar de Monteil, General of the Galleys and Governor of Provence, made a major contribution to Grignan’s development. He founded the collegiate chapter in 1512, marking a turning point in the village’s history. The barony of Grignan became a county in the 17th century, consolidating its regional importance.
Famous correspondence
The last member of the Adhemar family, Count François Adhemar de Monteil de Castellane d’Ornano, married Mademoiselle Françoise Marguerite de Sévigné, nicknamed the “prettiest girl in France”. This marriage gave rise to a famous correspondence between Françoise de Sévigné and her daughter, the Marquise de Sévigné, which has left its mark on literary history.
